Mini Reviews #13

chefChef (2014)
Director: Jon Favreau
Starring: Jon Favreau, John Leguizamo, Emjay Anthony

A great feel good movie that will give you more food cravings than you have ever had in your life. Jon Favreau stars as a chef who embarks on a culinary road trip with his friend and son to get out of a creative rut that culminated in a spectacular social media meltdown. Food porn is at insanely high levels and a snack is encouraged to accompany your viewing. Chef is an inoffensive light-hearted comedy that will leave you satisfied and grateful for the two hours of pleasant company. 7.5/10.

Fading-Gigolo+Fading Gigolo (2013)
Director: John Turturro
Starring: John Turturro, Woody Allen, Vanessa Paradis

A charming, lackadaisical comedy about a good looking middle aged man who is commissioned by his entrepreneurial friend to embark on a career in male escorting. John Turturro and Woody Allen provide easy watching, humour filled fun whilst Vanessa Paradis brings some gravitas to the film as a widowed Hasidic Jew seeking comfort. Fading Gigolo is as Woody Allen as a film can get without being written or directed by the man himself. Enjoyable cinematic eccentricity with a pleasing amount of heart. 8/10.

loveCrime d’Amour (Love Crime) (2010)
Director: Alain Corneau
Starring: Kristin Scott-Thomas, Ludivine Sagnier, Patrick Mille

Kristin Scott-Thomas shines in this dark thriller with erotic undertones as a powerful female boss who has an unhealthy influence over her seemingly devoted younger colleague played by Ludivine Sagnier. As the plot thickens the audience are treated to gripping drama and a murder that falls under the “why done it” category than “who done it”. Engrossing from start to finish and seductive performances from the two female protagonists, intelligent story telling and incredibly tense throughout. 7.5/10
