Mini Reviews #10

pariahPariah (2011)
Director: Dee Rees
Starring: Adepero Oduye, Kim Wayans, Pernell Walker

A gritty and intense drama about the sexual coming of age of a black teenage girl in New York City. A brilliant central performance from Adepero Oduye as a young lesbian who struggles to keep her secret from her overbearing family whilst at the same time attempting to form romantic attachments. Bleak at times but spotted with heart warming and humorous moments, Pariah gives an unafraid portrayal of the complications and familial tensions that can arise from a situation like the one depicted in the narrative. Important viewing. 8.5/10.

tinaWhat’s Love Got To Do With It (1993)
Director: Brian Gibson
Starring: Angela Bassett, Laurence Fishburne, Khandi Alexander

A gripping dramatisation of the life of one of the world’s biggest singers, Tina Turner. Angela Bassett and Laurence Fishburne both give commanding performances as Tina and Ike Turner, suitably vulnerable, resilient and terrifying respectively. At times hard to watch, the film tracks the physically and mentally abusive relationship suffered by Turner at the hands of her husband for more than fifteen years. Some artistic licence is taken with the authenticity of certain events, but all for the good of the cinematic narrative, resulting in a solid, engaging biopic. 7/10.

mudMud (2012)
Director: Jeff Nichols
Starring: Matthew McConaughey, Tye Sheridan, Jacob Lofland

A coming-of-age tale mixed with a heavy dose of criminal intrigue. The roots of the ‘McConaissance’ can be traced back to McConaughey’s fine performance as Mud, the mysterious yet endearing central character who enlists two young teenage boys to help him reunite with a lost love and escape fatal danger. Excellent acting is displayed throughout from the young and old in the cast, including supporting roles from Sam Shepard and Reese Witherspoon. A little over long at 130 minutes, but satisfying nonetheless. 7.5/10.
