Mini Reviews #4

What I have been watching over the last seven days:

suddenlySuddenly (2002)
Director: Diego Lerman
Starring: Tatiana Saphir, Carla Crespo, Veronica Hassan

An interesting Argentinian and Dutch film in which a naive shop assistant is swept away on a road trip by two free spirited punks. A story of sexual awakening and discovery layered with other thematic content such as loneliness, friendship and estranged familial ties. Filmed in black and white, this directorial choice does little to add anything meaningful to the picture. Stand out performances from Carla Crespo and Veronica Hassan as the two enigmatic antagonists. 6/10.

Screen Shot 2013-11-16 at 20.31.15Tattooed Tears (1979)
Director: Nick Broomfield
Starring: Brian, Marcus, Pedro

A raw and hard hitting documentary depicting the lives of inmates at a juvenile correctional facility in California. The film showcases the many difficulties faced by the institution’s workers whilst at the same time showing sympathy toward the prisoners by exposing flaws in the system. Broomfield’s total lack of narration may be off putting to some, but I feel that letting the scenes speak for themselves creates a much more intimate and immersive experience. 6/10.

Garden-State-2004Garden State (2004)
Director: Zach Braff
Starring: Zach Braff, Natalie Portman, Peter Sarsgaard

A whimsical and touching comedy drama starring Zach Braff as a twenty six year old struggling actor who must return to his hometown after the death of his mother. This heartwarming picture tackles the deep issue of mental health in such a way that leaves one questioning the state of treatment currently available to those who are told they need it. Enjoyable supporting performances from Natalie Portman and Peter Sarsgaard. Impressive writing and direction from Braff, if not a little over sentimental at times. 7.5/10.
